Dr. Richard Heyden Dr. Rick Heyden completed an Honours Bachelor of Science degree and Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo. He practiced in Terrace, British Columbia following his 1992 graduation. There he honed his downhill skiing skills and got the opportunity to explore Northern British Columbia. After a year, Dr. Heyden decided to move back to Ontario, closer to “home”. He practiced in Peterborough and Campbellford before opening his Lakefield office in 1995. By 2004, the little Lakefield office was at capacity and it was time to expand into the larger, current office at 161 Queen Street. Dr. Heyden enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and he challenges himself with flying, cycling, scuba diving, triathlons, running, downhill skiing and water sports. |
Dr. Shelley Martel Dr. Shelley Martel grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan and attended the University of Regina before heading to the University of Waterloo. There she received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1993 and was granted the Feinbloom Low Vision Award. She was an associate in Peterborough and Campbellford before joining her husband, Dr. Heyden, in 1998. Dr. Martel and Dr. Heyden were able to balance work and raising their family by job sharing at their Lakefield practice. Dr. Martel enjoys being a part of this community and she is thrilled to live in other people’s vacation destination! She has fun hauling her kids to various activities and finds limited time to travel, run, downhill ski, scuba dive, water ski and play in her flower gardens. |
Dr. Jessica Nichols Dr. Jessica Nichols grew up on a dairy farm near Newcastle, Ontario before attending the University of Guelph where she received her Bachelor of Science (Honours Biomedical Science) degree. She then graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo in 2011. Dr. Nichols earned several awards during her schooling including the W. Ross Andrews Prize for Clinical Optometry, and the Abbot Medical Optics Award for General Proficiency. During her training, she completed an externship in Huntsville, Alabama which focused on the treatment and management of various ocular diseases. Dr. Nichols enjoys reading, swimming, hiking and volunteering with Big Sisters. Also, Dr. Nichols has been chosen as the Ontario Association of Optometrist's chairperson for the Eye See Eye Learn program in Peterborough County. She is pleased to join the Lakefield community as an associate of Lakefield VisionCare. |
