Children's Eye Examination

Lakefield VisionCare prides itself in creating a child-friendly atmosphere.  We enjoy providing eye care to children and recommend an initial assessment by 3 years of age or sooner if you have concerns about your child's vision or there is a family history of an ocular condition.  OHIP covers yearly assessments for children 19 years and younger.  80% of a child’s learning is based on vision and 1 in 6 school-aged children experience learning difficulties which are a result of unknown or uncorrected vision conditions. Typically a children’s eye examination is enjoyable and we adapt the exam based on your child’s age and capabilities.  Your child does NOT need to know their letters to have a thorough assessment!

At Lakefield VisionCare, parents are asked to complete a health history form regarding their child and to point out any visual concerns.  Your child will participate in some of the Preliminary Testing either independently or on their parent’s knee.  They will then be escorted to the Examination Room where the doctor will engage your child and get to know them.  The visual assessment tends to be light-hearted and fun – all leading to actual clinical results that can be used to determine if your child has an eye turn (strabismus), weak eye (amblyopia), requires a prescription, or has an eye health concern.  On occasion, eye drops need to be used to better determine if glasses are required or to rule out an ocular health condition.  If Drs. Heyden, Martel or Nichols recommends eye drops, this will be discussed in depth with the parent so that all questions are addressed.

Our Eyewear Boutique has an excellent selection of children’s glasses.  These frames are durable and we always use an impact resistant lens to suit a child’s active lifestyle.  We stand by our eyewear with a one & two-year frame and lens warranty.

Eye See…Eye Learn®

Eye See…Eye Learn® has come to Peterborough County!  Lakefield VisionCare is proud to participate in the Eye See…Eye Learn® program for children in junior kindergarten. Children's basic eye exams are covered under OHIP when you present your child’s health card.

If your child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive a COMPLIMENTARY pair donated by Plastic Plus, Modern Optical Canada and Lakefield VisionCare. The value of the glasses is estimated over $250.

The Eye See...Eye Learn® program was developed to raise awareness of the importance of having children's eyes checked upon starting school. Each year thousands of children start school without ever having an eye exam.
